The short version

AWS describes the Well-Architected Agent as a next-generation evolution of AWS Trusted Advisor and the AWS Well-Architected Tool. In preview, it analyzes infrastructure across cost, security, performance, and reliability (AWS also says “resilience” in the News Blog), prioritizes recommendations against declared business goals, and can return automation-ready fixes — including analysis of Terraform, AWS CloudFormation, and AWS CDK templates.

What AWS says it does

According to the AWS News Blog announcement by Channy Yun (October 1, 2026), the agent:

Getting started (preview flow)

The News Blog describes creating an agent profile in the AWS Well-Architected console (accounts/Regions to monitor, optimization pillars, goals), provisioning customer-managed IAM roles for read access, and expecting resource/application recommendations within 24 hours after profile creation. You can also upload a ZIP of Terraform / CloudFormation / CDK for pre-deployment architecture review, and add application context (accounts, Regions, services, tags) to improve relevancy.

AWS notes that generative AI recommendations may contain errors or incomplete information — customers remain responsible for evaluating recommendations in context (Responsible AI practices called out in the announcement).

Availability and access requirements

How it relates to the classic Well-Architected Tool

AWS Well-Architected documentation states the Agent and the existing Well-Architected Tool are distinct ways to review architecture and can be used together from the Well-Architected console. Manual reviews with user-defined lenses remain available.

Why it matters for practitioners

If your reviews still start from blank questionnaires, this preview points at a future where findings arrive with IaC diffs and runbooks attached — closer to how experienced architects already work. The Support-plan gate and three-Region agent footprint mean not every account will turn this on on day one. For certification and architecture students: treat the agent as an accelerator, not a substitute for understanding Well-Architected pillars and trade-offs yourself.

What we did not invent

This post does not claim GA status, does not invent pricing, and does not assert Support-tier eligibility beyond AWS’s published “AWS Support plan” wording. Secondary coverage (e.g. The Register) was used only as a pointer back to AWS’s numbers (65+ services); citations below prefer primary AWS pages.
